A just-released study about the dietary habits of American children offers a window into some of the problems of contemporary parenting. In the online edition of Pediatrics, researchers reported yesterday on the behavior of children offered different breakfast choices. One group of children was offered a breakfast of high-sugar packaged cereals. The other was given low-sugar cereals with the option of adding sugar and fruit. The second group consumed markedly less total sugar. ACSH’s Cheryl Martin says, “This study provides important information for parents worried about the possibility of childhood obesity. That kids won’t add as much sugar to a bowl of low-sugar cereal as they’ll get in something like Frosted Flakes is worth knowing.”
